FAQs related to IIUM Wi-Fi issues.

How to Create an IIUM Wi-Fi Guest Account

IIUM providesย temporary Wi-Fi access for visitors/guestsย through theย IIUM-Guestย network. Hereโ€™s how to get access:


Option 1: Self-Registration (For Short-Term Guests)

  1. Connect to "IIUM-Guest" Wi-Fiย (no password required).

  2. Open a browser โ†’ You will be redirected to theย IIUM Guest Portal.

  3. Register as a Guest:

    • Fill in:

      • Name

      • Mobile Numberย (for OTP verification)

      • Email

      • Purpose of Visitย (e.g., meeting, event)

    • Agree to theย terms & conditions.

  4. Verify via OTPย (sent to your phone).

  5. Loginย with the provided credentials.

โœ…ย Access granted for 24 hoursย (renewable if needed).


Option 2: Sponsored Guest Account (For Long-Term Visitors)

If youโ€™re aย guest speaker, vendor, or visiting researcher, anย IIUM staff member must sponsor your account:

  1. The staff submits a request via:

    • i-FIRSTย (Ticket category:ย Wi-Fi Access Request)

    • Email ICT Help Deskย (servicedesk@iium.edu.my) with:

      • Guestโ€™sย full name, contact, and duration of stay.

      • Reason for accessย (e.g., conference, collaboration).

  2. Once approved, the guest receives login details via email/SMS.


Important Notes

  • Guest accounts expireย after the approved duration.

  • Speed may be limitedย compared to student/staff Wi-Fi.

  • Commercial use is prohibitedย (only for official visits).


Troubleshooting

โŒย OTP not received?

  • Check spam folder or request a resend.

โŒย Account expired?

  • Re-register or ask your IIUM sponsor to extend access.

Trouble-shooting Issues Related to WI-FI

This is a general guideline to troubleshoot on why you cannot access wifi/internet at IIUM campus. Please follow each instruction step by step based on your own issue.ย 
ISSUE 1
If you can access iMaluum but cannot access wifi with your hp and laptop, please reset your iMaluum password. If it doesn't work, please try to reset it at least twice. To reset your password, follow below steps:
First, setย yourย hp numberย here (you just need to register once).ย

ISSUE 2
If you can access iMaluum and can access wifi through your hp, but cannot access wifi through laptop or vice versa, please follow below steps :
Windows Notebook/Laptop
1.Try clearing your web browser history by clearing theย cache and ALLย the history.ย  ย ย 

2. Install other browsers such as Internet Explorer(IE) orย Mozilla Firefox andย use it to login instead of Google Chrome/ Microsoft Edge.

3. Removing the network adapter then installing it back(but remember do not uninstall the driver when asked to) :ย https://kb.wisc.edu/page.php?id=58029ย 
4. If that does not work, then try installing malware cleaner, then run a full scan. :ย https://www.malwarebytes.com/adwcleaner/ย 
5.ย If all fails, please bring your device to ITD ICT Services Help Desk at your respective campus during office hours.ย 
Android
  1. Try clearing your web browser history by clearing theย cache and ALLย the history.ย ย ย 

  2. Install other browsers such as UC Browser orย Mozilla Firefox and use it to loginย instead of Google Chrome or default android browser.ย

  3. ย If all fails, please bring your device to ITD ICT Services Help Desk at your respective campusย during office hours.ย 
ISSUE 3
You can access wifi through your hp and laptop but any third device failed to register or you get aย message like "Your session limit has been hit."ย 
Answer: Students are allowed to connect two devices concurrently. Any third device you try to register will fail. If you want to register/change devices, logout from either the 1st device or the 2nd device then try again. Sometimes it may take a few minutes to a few hours (Usually four hours).ย 
ISSUE 4
You tried to change password but got an error message stating that only active students can change password.ย 
Answer: Please visit AMAD or ODDAIL to check and update your status.ย

How to forget SSID due to wireless maintenance

Use the instructions below to forget an SSID (Wireless Network) on your device as part of troubleshooting or as needed.ย 

iPhone

Remember that when your password expires, is changed, or you forget the SSID, you will have to enter your credentials again to login.

When asked to trust certificate please make sure the domain is:

  1. iiumwifilogin2.iium.edu.my
  2. โ iiumwifilogin3.iium.edu.my

How to Fix IIUM Wi-Fi Connection Problems (Students & Staff)

if you're unable to connect to IIUM-Studentย orย IIUM-Staffย Wi-Fi, follow these troubleshooting steps:


Step 1: Basic Checks

โœ…ย Ensure youโ€™re in rangeย of an IIUM Wi-Fi hotspot (Gombak/Kuantan/Gambang/Pagoh).
โœ…ย Restart your deviceย (phone/laptop) and try reconnecting.
โœ…ย Turn Wi-Fi off/onย or toggleย Airplane Modeย for 10 seconds.


Step 2: Correct Wi-Fi Network & Login

Step 3: Forget & Reconnect Network

  1. Go toย Wi-Fi settingsย โ†’ย Forget "IIUM-Student" or "IIUM-Staff".

  2. Reconnect andย re-enter credentials.


Step 4: Check for Blocked Devices


Step 5: Update Device Settings

For Windows

  1. Pressย Win + Rย โ†’ Typeย ncpa.cplย โ†’ Openย Network Connections.

  2. Right-clickย Wi-Fiย โ†’ย Disableย โ†’ Wait 10 sec โ†’ย Enable.

For Android/iOS

  1. Go toย Settings โ†’ Wi-Fi โ†’ Advanced.

  2. Setย IP settings to DHCPย (not static).

For macOS

  1. Go toย System Preferences โ†’ Network.

  2. Selectย Wi-Fi โ†’ Advanced โ†’ TCP/IP โ†’ Renew DHCP Lease.


Step 6: Report Persistent Issues

If Wi-Fi still doesnโ€™t work:

  1. Submit a ticketย viaย i-FIRST.

Q: Are personal routers allowed in IIUM?
A: No. Unauthorized devices (routers, switches, hubs) are prohibited and may result in disciplinary action.

How do I connect to IIUM-Staff Wi-Fi?

Q: How do I connect to IIUM-Staff Wi-Fi?
A:

  1. Select SSIDย "IIUM-Staff".

  2. Use your IIUM email username (withoutย @iium.edu.my) and email password.

  3. For first-time registration, connect toย "IIUM-Staff_Registration" and follow browser prompts.

What should I do if my device canโ€™t find the Wi-Fi network?

A:
If your device canโ€™t detect the Wi-Fi network, try the following steps:

  1. โœ… Ensure the Wi-Fi feature is turned on in your device settings.

  2. ๐Ÿ“ก Check if the router is powered on and actively broadcasting the network.

  3. ๐Ÿ“ถ Make sure you are within range of the Wi-Fi signal.

  4. ๐Ÿ”„ Restart both your router and your device to refresh the connection.
